What we need

It’s not that I’m old. Well, some people would say I am. But, honestly, I have never felt younger. Still, I’ve been around for almost 22,000 days. And sometimes, I enjoy reflecting on what I’ve learned from them.

Time gone past allows you a bird’s perspective if you dare to look down there.

Here are a few of the things I’ve seen from “up here”:

What you want isn’t always what you want

The cultures in your society, family, social circle, and workplace will all inform you about what’s desirable and acceptable. They all expect something from you, and not living up to people’s expectations is always a matter of shame and guilt.

If your environment changes, you could easily find that what you believed you wanted wasn’t really your wants.

What you want isn’t always what you need

So, you want that big, red apple – metaphorically spoken.

You want that new car or big house. You want to be your company’s salesperson of the year. You want to be a rock star. No, sorry, that’s the old man me talking. You want to be a TikTok celebrity, then. You want to climb Kilimanjaro before it’s too late.

Are you sure that’s what you need?

Be sure because these are things you may regret at the end of your life.

Perhaps what you really need is to feel safe with someone, to feel unconditionally loved and unconditionally love someone.

That’s what I found.

You might find something else, but it may be simpler than you expect. The answer awaits inside you. You just need the courage to look for it.
